A Buckinghamshire-based ostomy care specialist has received the royal seal of approval from the Duke of Kent who presented them with the Queen’s Award for Innovation on 4th December.
Trio Healthcare received the award for developing a life-changing silicone adhesive that prevents abdominal stomas from leaking. Managing Director at Trio, Lloyd Pearce, was presented with the prestigious award at the company’s headquarters in Buckinghamshire.
The Duke of Kent commented:
“I am delighted to be in Buckinghamshire to present Trio Healthcare with the Queen’s Award for Innovation. Their dedication to healthcare innovation is improving the lives of ostomates everywhere – they are very worthy winners.”
Peter Lannen, an ostomate, shared how he and a small group of other ostomates set up a support group called Ostofriends after funding for stoma nurses in his area was cut. He also helps other ostomates to adapt to life with a stoma and getting back to being themselves, whilst still working as a crew member for the ambulance service.
Another ostomate, Diana Faires, spoke about her vision – how she believes her stoma has made her who she is today and the importance of ostomates talking about their experiences. Alan Fox, who had his urostomy five years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer, told The Duke that Trio’s silicone seal “changed his life for the better”.
Trio Healthcare is based at Missenden Abbey, owned by Buckinghamshire New University and is passionate about developing ostomy care products to help people living with a stoma.
Abdominal stomas, which are surgically created intestinal openings, can result in leakage and skin damage – negatively effecting the social life and wellbeing of ostomates. The Buckinghamshire healthcare specialists knew that something had to be done and created a unique, secure adhesive called Trio Responsive Silicone, which surrounds the stoma in a skin-friendly seal while maintaining a secure connection.
Lloyd Pearce, Managing Director of Trio, said:
“It is an honour to receive this royal award by the Duke of Kent for our contribution to the advancement of ostomy care. We are so proud knowing that our products are making a real difference to the lives of ostomates, who feel less socially anxious, now that bag leakage is not a concern for them. We get to hear first-hand how Trio products have changed their lives and how grateful they are that we care”.
Jason Brannan, Director at Medilink North of England, of which Trio Healthcare is a member, added:
“It’s amazing to watch the hard work of Trio being recognised on a national stage and by HRH the Duke of Kent. The Trio team couldn’t be more passionate about improving the lives of ostomates, by preventing stoma leakage and skin damage to enhance their overall wellbeing.”
